Ode to School

When you get to school
you feel good.
When you get to school
you feel like learning.
Learn. Learn. Learn!
Is all you think of
at school.
- Eileen circa 1991

Haha. I am such a dork.

I've been sorting through old boxes of schoolwork, pictures and random letters in an effort to clean up before my departure. In the process, I've unearthed a lot of embarrassing stuff that serves as further proof of my lack of childhood and my full-blown nerdiness. This poem was one of many in a notebook of mine. Within its spiral-bound, neon cover lies a number of poems, a 3-part short story series called "The Haunted House", some hand-drawn mazes and pictures, and a survey of all my friends favorite singers and movie stars. (I liked Mariah Carey and Growing Pains; my sister was a big fan of Bell Biv Devoe and Doogie Howser, M.D.)

Did I mention that I did all of this in my spare time and not as part of a homework assignment? Yes, I was lame. And now there's hard evidence. I did not have a childhood like most people had; I have few memories of cartoons and playing with friends. But I did love to read. Haha. Cool.
